Belly Laughs at the Museum

One of my favorite sounds to hear is the deep laugh of my children. I am not talking about a chuckle or a nervous laugh. The laugh I adore is the deep belly laugh of surprise and joy; the sound that signifies that a wonderful and surprising discovery has just been made. This past weekend, Matt and I had the joy of hearing many of these laughs. During our recent trip to the children’s museum in Indianapolis, Indiana, our children entertained my husband and me with their laughter.

Great reviews and the Lionel train collection drove Matt and I to choose the children’s museum in Indianapolis as a day trip destination during our winter vacation. At first, our boys were not sure if they even wanted to visit the museum. However when we passed the huge dinosaurs in front of the museum, the boys were hooked. The first belly laughs surfaced as they peered at the giant dinosaur models peeking inside the museum. The laughing did not stop for quite awhile. They ran in excited circles around the vast train collections and layouts. In the Dinosphere, the boys pretended to be dinosaurs as they gazed at dinosaur fossils and habitats, including a “hands on” dinosaur nest with plush dinosaur eggs. It was hard to drag the boys away from many of the exhibits including the snow castle, the boats in the ScienceWorks exhibit, and the mock airplane in the Egypt exhibit. Even though the guys did not care for it, my favorite exhibit was the Barbie exhibit. After four and a half hours of exploring the museum, Matt and I were exhausted from keeping up with the boys. Yet, we had not even seen every exhibit in the museum! As we began our drive back to Kentucky, Matt and I contemplated if the price and time spent was worth the trip. At the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, our guys laughed, learned, and made wonderful memories with their parents. Yes, our money and time were well spent.
